Hugh's History is a collection of events that have happened in Hugh's past. Or it might be a collection of his thoughts on current adventures. Or it might be a collection of potentially interesting events and actions that take place "off camera" in the regular campaign. Or it might be a collection of steaming horse droppings.

Reposted from the Deomin's Deeds thread.

Hugh wrote some great additional material for the collaboation post, but there wasnt space to work it in smoothly. Here are the words Hugh shared with Brandis and Deomin at the top of Skyclave about his firsts.

Hugh’s first time with a woman was when he was seventeen. Her name was Mira Tanner and she was the daughter of the tanner in Cedar Grove where Hugh was from. Hugh sold hides and skins to her father, and occasionally she would help run the store. She took a shine to Hugh maybe because he wasn’t one of the same few boys who were always in town. So after a few secret walks with a lot of sweet talk and handholding, Hugh took Mira to little place where a meandering stream fell a few yards over the rocks of a secluded valley. He brought bottle of wine, and without too much convincing he talked her out of her clothes, and they spent a pleasurable afternoon in the sun by the stream. Eventually Mira’s father heard that the two were spending time together and he put a stop to it because he didn’t want his daughter ending up with Hugh who had no real prospects.

Hugh’s first time getting piss drunk was when he was fourteen. Tobias, a friend of Hugh’s deceased father, had been teaching Hugh for about two years. Hugh had killed his first big buck that wasn’t part of one of Tobias’s lessons, and he blew all the money he got from selling the meat, hide, and horns on two big bottles of brandy. He snuck it up to where his best friend Alan, Tobias’s son, was tending sheep. The two of them downed the liquor, each egging the other on to drink more, were royally sick, and then they fell asleep. They woke the next day, hungover as hell, to find the sheep had all wandered off, and it took two days before they managed to find all of them.

The first time Hugh killed a person (and by person I’m thinking someone of a player character race, not going to count orcs) was after he’d left Cedar Grove and was working as a caravan guard. It was late at night and Hugh was patrolling around the silent merchant wagons when he heard a slight sound from behind him. He turned to see the glint of a blade as a dark figure rushed toward him, and managed to call out “raid! raid!,” before the bandit was on him, and then he was fighting for his life. The two went down on the ground; the bandit had a hand around Hugh’s throat while he tried to skewer Hugh in the guts. Hugh fought with the man for his dagger with his left hand while trying to break the choking grasp with his right. This stalemate went on for a few agonizing seconds before Hugh abandoned the fight for his throat, drew his own dagger, and plunged it in the bandit’s chest a couple times. The bandit went limp on top of him, and Hugh fought his way up to help defend the camp. A few of the other guards had been taken unaware by the attack, but Hugh’s warning had alerted the rest of the guards, and the caravan awoke to repel the invading bandits. Seeing that their surprise attack had been thwarted, the bandits retreated after several minutes of fighting. Once it appeared that the threat was over Hugh made his way back to where he had been ambushed, and found that the man who’d attacked was still alive. Hugh’s dagger had taken him in the lung, and the man lay on the ground gurgling blood as he gasped for breath. Hugh looked into the man’s terror stricken and pleading eyes for a moment before taking a blade and ending the bandit’s misery. The next morning the leader of the caravan had the bodies of the dead attackers stripped and hung by the roadside as a warning to other would be raiders.

Enjoy Hugh fans.

This event takes place a few days after boarding the Laughing Maiden in Skyclave.

Hugh leaned over the railing as his body heaved, emptying the remains of his breakfast into the water below. The sky was blue, and a light breeze filled the sails of the Laughing Maiden as he clung to the rail, exhausted from his most recent bout of vomiting. Hugh panted and tried to spit the rest of the bile from his mouth. The last two days had been highly unpleasant for Hugh. He had heard of people getting seasick before, but had always figured that it wouldn’t be a problem for him. He had ridden in the backs of wagons and carts for hours on end, and had even been on a few small boats with no problem. By the Hells, he’d flown two days in a box under a giant dragonfly thing with only a twinge or two from his stomach. The only time he could recall feeling this ill, was when some undead monstrosity had clawed him back in Wheloon. Ugh, thoughts of that place brought a bitter taste to Hugh’s mouth that had nothing to do with the spasms in his stomach. He and Garret had been sneaking around in a warehouse looking for food or anything else they could “scavenge” when they discovered that the place wasn’t as unguarded as they’d thought. One of the undead things landed a blow on Hugh and his digestive tract suddenly needed to empty itself from both ends. They’d escaped, Garret always knew a way out, but it had been a miserable two days until Hugh found a cleric who wasn’t so evil that he wouldn’t sell his services to someone who needed them. Hugh took a deep breath and looked around at the ship. Sailors crawled through the rigging while others yelled commands that could have been gibberish for all he knew. Always know a way out. Garret had been a bastard but he’d been right about that. If something happened to the boat or the sailors, Hugh would be stuck out here in the middle of the ocean. “Guess it’s time to learn how to sail,” he thought.

As Heptos informed the group that they would not be leaving the philosopher’s temple, Hugh’s thoughts raced.

“Can’t leave?! What do you mean can’t leave? Arath is our problem! We started it, we’ll finish it. They have champions? We’ll show him we’re better than his champions. What if we’re not better than his champions? What if it’s not because of strength but because of a certain skill they have? Can’t win. What if he didn’t allow the contest anyway? Dismissed us? Trapped here by allies. Will not be trapped. Would the others fight? Maybe. Probabley. But what if they don’t? Could I escape? Can’t escape. Could I kill this man? Kill him and then escape? Maybe. What if he’s too strong? Deva? Trapped here forever. Maybe not forever. Till Arath is delt with? How long will that take? Years. Would they let me go after? Maybe not. Secrecy. Could I kill this man? Would that even work? Magic barrier. Don’t know how it works. Force him to take it down? Could I kill this man?”

Aurora and the others begin to march from the room to test the barrier, Wrenn seems to want to speak further with Heptos. Hugh stands for a moment, eyeing the Deva, trying to gauge his strength, then, saying nothing, he follows after the others.

This one takes place shortly before the group made their way up into the Snowflake mountains to find the Philosopher's Temple.

Hugh sat at the small wooden table and nursed his ale. The group had arrived in Caradoon several hours ago was now enjoying some much-needed respite at the local tavern. Aurora charmed and chatted-up the barkeep while Deomin seemed to be enthralled by the drunken stories of a local fisherman. Wrenn had talked Brandis into a drinking match where Brandis had to take two drinks for each drink Wrenn took, and Brandis was telling one his stories between swallows, not seeming to care whether anyone was listening, though half the bar was. Hugh was enjoying his quiet table after the close confines of the ship. He’d gotten mostly used to shipboard life on the voyage from Skyclave, but he’d never gotten over feeling of being packed in a barrel of salted pork. It had been less so towards the end of the voyage, but it was hard to enjoy the gift of extra elbowroom while knowing its grim source.
So Hugh was stretching out his long legs, enjoying the feeling of a stomach filled with something other than ship rations, as the barmaid cleared his plate away and brought him his second ale. She was quite pretty. Nothing to write an epic about, but her long brown hair, pleasant figure, and welcoming smile, reminded Hugh of other appetites not yet sated. Hugh took a sip of his drink and considered whether or not Faerun’s oldest profession would have a franchise in this remote mountain town. Perhaps he’d ask the bartender. Purveyors of cheap spirits often knew where a person could find a source of professional female hospitality. Hugh studied the balding middle-aged man for minute or two to see if he was the type who would easily take offense. Satisfied, Hugh downed the rest of his ale and made his way across the tavern to have a chat…

Hugh looked over the makeshift rope harness that would be the only thing keeping him from falling to his watery death when the glider made its assault on the Yargo. The group was gathered around the arcane flying device, making last minute checks, before the craft made the climb hundreds of feet through the air to where the sky-pirate ship hung tethered to the cloud piercing rock spire. The deck of the Laughing Maiden rose and fell with the swell of the waves beneath Hugh’s boots. There would be no easy way off the Yargo. The glider would drop off the first wave of attackers and then fly back down to collect reinforcements; the fight would likely be decided before the second wave arrived. Climbing down the shear rock-face of the pinnacle would take hours; the crew of the Yargo could easily dispose of anyone attempting to scale down it. Brandis’s magic ring could supposedly let them all float down to safety, but Hugh had never seen it used on a large scale before. Hugh looked up from the rocking deck to where the captured glider’s homing device said the Yargo hovered high above them; thick fog shrouded the sea and sky for miles in every direction, and not even Hugh’s fine senses could detect any sign of the pirate vessel. The only safe way off the ship would be to take control of it.

The halfling guard sent another vicious series of thrusts at Hugh with his polearm, but to Hugh, each thrust seemed to come slower than the last. Dodging to the side, turning so that the blade just scraped along the thick leather of his armor, and finally slapping the shaft aside so that the cruel hooked head of the halfing’s weapon brushed Hugh’s hair as it stabbed past. His heart pounding Hugh quick stepped back from his assailant and time seemed to come to a crawl. The raindrops lazily made their way down from the sky to splash one by one against Hugh’s exposed face and hands. The clean scent of the rain was mixed with the metallic scent of lightning and the musky scent of the huge minotaur at his back. A flash of holy light sliced through the gloom from Arora’s hammer, briefly painting the combatant’s in stark relief. A breeze pulled Hugh’s wet cloak out over the drop-off to his left: a thousand feet, or more, from the edge of the damaged airship to the sea below. Hugh looked at the foe before him and breathed it all in, alive.
The halfling saw the tall human before him quickly step back, heard the snap of a bowstring, and pain suddenly blossomed in his shoulder, spinning him around; another snap, and he felt another weight bury itself in his back, pushing him over the side of the ship, his own screams loud in his ears as the void opened up beneath him.

Hugh stepped out of the bar with his companions into the dimly lit street. As they pass the alleyway behind the bar, Hugh can clearly see the spindly man crouching in the shadows of the rubbish bin. Hugh steps away from his companions and walks directly toward the sneaking figure. The man, seeing that he’s been found, stands upright and walks toward Hugh with a smile and an outstretched hand. They meet at the entrance to the alley. “Hey Fletch, long time no…” The man’s greeting is cut off as Hugh throws him up against the alley wall, his forearm crushing the thin man’s windpipe. The man struggles as Hugh draws the dagger from his belt with his free hand and plunges it into the man’s stomach. Again and again, the blade pierces flesh, until the guts of the limp form pressed against the wall now decorate the pavement. Hugh steps back, allowing the body to fall to the ground. Blood covers his hands and clothing. His companions stand behind him, bewildered.

…Hugh can clearly see the spindly man crouching in the shadows of the rubbish bin. Hugh hesitates for a fraction of a second, and then walks on with his companions. The spindly man steps out of the shadows and starts casually walking beside the group.
“Hey Fletch, long time no see! Get it?”
“Funny as always…”
